I used to think podcasts weren’t my thing. I was so used to video and other visual mediums that the thought of just listening to something seemed so boring. That is, until I realized podcasts were basically just music but talking and I was like, wow Bryn way to be judgmental toward podcasts. So I gave them a try and it turns out I love them. No surprise there.
I’ve basically started listening to podcasts in all the “filler” moments of my life. While I cook dinner, put my makeup on in the morning, take my makeup off at night… I’m probably listening to a podcast. They’re a great way to enjoy yourself during the mundane tasks of your everyday life. And I love them so much that I almost have too many to listen to at this point.
But somehow, I’ve managed to narrow the list down to my top eight. These feel like a good mix of everything, but you’ll definitely be able to tell I have a type. With both podcasts and boyfriends. But podcasts come easier to me so, that’s what we’re going to talk about today.
1. Dear Hank and John
I believe this is one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, and it may have been one of the reasons I started listening to them in the first place. If you’ve ever read The Fault in Our Stars, watched a Crash Course video in class, or wanted to go to VidCon, then you should probably know who Hank and John Green are. They are basically the big brothers of YouTube, always giving out life advice and teaching you about things you wouldn’t otherwise understand. Their Vlogbrothers channel is one of my favorites, as well.
Dear Hank and John, as the name may imply, is basically set up like an advice column, where anyone can send in their totally serious or completely weird questions for Hank and John to answer. Preference is given to questions about death. Why, you may ask? Well, it’s hard to explain unless you know them. But if you like a good mix of serious and completely dumb and weird (which my guess is you do if you watch my channel or read my blog posts), then you definitely need to check this one out.
2. Lizard People
What are lizard people, you ask? If you’re a hardcore conspiracy theorist, you know the answer. If you’re not (but maybe you want to be), then this podcast is for you. I stumbled upon this podcast last summer and completely fell down the rabbit hole of crazy conspiracies. I couldn’t get enough. Which is why the Lizard People podcast is on my list of favorites.
This podcast covers everything from Bigfoot to the Illuminati and it does so in a way that is completely hilarious and serious all at once. Each episode has a different guest, topic, and tone, so you’re bound to find at least one that you like. If you’re into conspiracy theories, but not enough to devote your life to them, this podcast is a great way to get a taste and then move on with your life.
3. Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig
If you’ve been following me for awhile, it’s no surprise that I love Grace Helbig. So obviously I love her podcast. Especially because she interviews other Youtubers in the dumbest way possible. Have you ever wanted to know your favorite Internet creator’s weirdest secrets, including their worst pants-shitting story? No? Me neither, but I love this podcast anyway.
The fun this about Not Too Deep is just as the title implies, it’s not too deep. So every conversation topic is random, light-hearted, and goofy. Which means you never know where it’s going to go next. I’ve found some of my favorite Youtube creators by listening to this podcast, and you’re bound to fall even more in love with Grace while you’re at it.
4. Here to Make Friends
One of my favorite things about the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise is talking about and/or listening to other people talk about the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise. So this podcast fills a hole in my soul. Emma and Clare recap every episode of The Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise. And they also talk about everything going on outside of the Bachelor world, from the relationships to the scandals and everything in between.
What I love about Here to Make Friends is that it’s a perfect mix of fun and serious (are you sensing a theme here?). I love that they don’t take the show too seriously, but they are also able to call it out on its BS. They can be respectful and critical, while also being fun and remembering that at the end of the day, the show is weird as hell. Which it totally is. So if you’re looking for the perfect Bachelor recap podcast… this would be my suggestion.
5. Crash On My Couch
This podcast is a new favorite from a couple of Youtubers who I never expected to like so much. While Will and Arden’s Youtube videos feel much more serious and aesthetically-focused, Crash On My Couch is much more fun, weird, and light-hearted. Their dynamic as a couple is great, and I love the passion they bring to everything they discuss.
And if you’re wondering what exactly they discuss…that’s a little harder to pin down. Sometimes it’s advice and other times it’s weird Japanese vending machines. You never know exactly what you’re going to get, which is kind of what I love about it. Will and Arden have some odd interests, and oddly enough, I absolutely love hearing about them.
6. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text
This particular podcast is one of the weirder ones I listen to. And to be honest, I’m not always in the mood for it. But occasionally, when my little English major heart starts to miss being in school, this podcast is a perfect fix. Basically, the hosts of Harry Potter and the Sacred Text go through every chapter of Harry Potter and analyze it as though it were a sacred text. They look at themes, characters, morals… everything you could imagine.
And it’s absolutely fascinating. Especially if you’re anything like me and you get a weird thrill out of hyper-analyzing fiction. And you also love Harry Potter. Then it’s the perfect mix. So if you’ve ever wanted to delve deep into the world of Harry Potter and analyze it to your heart’s content, this will probably be the podcast for you.
7. Don’t Blame Me with Meghan Rienks
Oh look, another advice podcast run by a Youtuber. Yes, I realize I have a type. I warned you, didn’t I? Look, I love Meghan Rienks. I love her open, honest, I-don’t-give-a-shit demeanor. So when you take that and mix it with advice, you have Meghan’s Don’t Blame Me podcast. And I love it. There’s something fun about someone giving advice while knowing full-well that their advice may be terrible. And then giving it anyway. It’s weirdly refreshing.
Even if you don’t watch Meghan’s videos, I think anyone can appreciate a good advice podcast. Especially when that advice isn’t super serious, psychological stuff. That’s all fine and dandy, but sometimes you need something a little more light-hearted, you know?
8. Gilmore Guys
If you’re a frequent listener of podcasts but you haven’t heard of Gilmore Guys, I’m not sure where you’ve been hiding. This is probably my favorite format of a podcast ever created. I could listen to this type of podcast for every show I’ve ever watched, and I would be extremely happy. And also probably never leave my bed.
In this podcast, Kevin and Demi (who are hilarious, by the way), go back through every episode of the Gilmore Girls, one by one, and discuss them all. Yep, all seven seasons. And then the Netflix reboot. It’s absolutely amazing and I can’t recommend it enough if you’ve ever watched an episode of Gilmore Girls and slightly enjoyed it. Seriously, can I do a One Tree Hill version of this? Not even joking.
