Every couple of months, the Internet almost gives me a heart attack when it tells me some of my favorite shows will be leaving Netflix. I’m hoping this time it’s just an elaborate April fools prank. But I just wanted to tell you about all my favorite TV shows to watch on Netflix so you have a chance to watch them before they’re gone!
I absolutely love Netflix because it gives me the opportunity to watch things I otherwise couldn’t. But it’s scary to think that all my favorite shows could be gone in a second. Oddly, these are the types of things that keep me up at night. So here are eight shows that I have watched from beginning to end and have become obsessed with thanks to Netflix.
(Yes, Netflix, this is me trying to butter you up so you don’t get rid of any of my favorite shows. Don’t hate me.)
One Tree Hill
If it weren’t for Netflix, I may never have been able to start watching my now-favorite TV show. I used to get the DVDs sent to me in the mail; a feature of Netflix that, sadly, many “kids these days” won’t even remember.
This show was everything to me in high school. It’s always my first recommendation for TV shows to watch on Netflix. What starts off as a story about rival half-brothers trying to live in the same town and play on the same basketball team, it grows into something so much bigger. This show has the most incredible characters, friendships, and relationships. No matter how dramatic or “soap opera” it gets, its characters ground the show and make it worth coming back to every time.
This is a classic show that I will be so disappointed if it ever leaves Netflix. This is one of those shows that I will give you a crazy look if you tell me you’ve never seen it. I was lucky enough to grow up watching Friends, but many people weren’t so lucky.
Again, this show is a perfect example of amazing characters that ground it and make it consistently great. The six main characters are so incredibly weird and quirky that every situation they get in is complete entertainment. They manage to make even the most basic adult situations into something hilarious and over-the-top. This is one of those shows you re-watch every time you’re feeling stressed or down and it instantly makes you feel comfortable and better.
With the recent Netflix reboot, I’m sure this show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I’m also sure you’ve probably heard of this everywhere because it seems to be one of everyone’s favorite TV shows to watch on Netflix. This show is a cult-classic, and for good reason.
This show is centered around the relationship between a young, single mother and her daughter. While these two make the show, it would be nothing without everything around them. The show is full of quirky characters, small town charm, and countless jokes and pop culture references. More than anything, this show is so much fun and has powers to instantly make you feel better. I’m sure of it.
This is one of those shows where, unless you live under a rock, you have inevitably seen countless gifs and quotes from it multiple times. It’s such a fun, quote-worthy show you can’t help but enjoy to some extent.
Once again, it’s the cast of characters that make this show and the complete absurdity of it. The show is set up as a documentary, following “typical” workers in a “typical” office of a paper company. But there is nothing typical about any of the characters. No matter what your sense of humor, I’m pretty sure this show will have it. I’m also pretty sure this show gets funnier the more you watch it.
Here’s another example of a show I may never have watched if it weren’t for Netflix. It’s one of those girly guilty pleasures that hooks you in and keeps you until the very end of the series.
The show follows a bunch of New York City elite teenagers as they navigate their lives. Their biggest problem being a blogger who seems to know every little secret and detail about their lives — and uses it to blackmail them. This show may be worth it just for the Gossip Girl reveal at the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed it in the interim.
And if nothing else, it made me recognize Leighton Meester when I heard her on the phone while walking down the street in NYC. So, win?
Parks and Recreation
This show is basically The Office in a different setting, with slightly different characters. It took awhile for me to finally watch this, but I was not disappointed. I’m not going to tell you which one I like better because that’s a hard question and I don’t want any angry emails!
As someone who is from Indiana, it is absolutely hilarious to watch a show about government workers in a small Indiana town’s parks and recreation department. You have characters who couldn’t care less about it, and then you have Leslie Knope. Leslie is the kick-ass female version of Michael Scott, who probably cares more about Indiana parks than I do about most things. Underneath all the humor, this show has a heart that I absolutely love.
Friday Night Lights
I consider this show a more down-to-earth, hometown version of One Tree Hill. But at the same time, it’s also anti-OTH. It deals with similar issues but executes them in a much more genuine, realistic way. I feel like this is one of the more under-rated TV shows to watch on Netflix. So if you like drama but dislike the over-dramatic, this may be for you.
This is a show based in a small town that revolves around high school football. It’s so interesting to watch how everyone in the town, adults and kids, players and fans, interact with and are affected by the sport. Even if you don’t love football, you’ll be totally pulled in by the way the characters love it.
Pretty Little Liars
I’ll admit, this show probably isn’t for everyone. But it’s such a guilty pleasure TV show to watch on Netflix for me. It has an addicting balance of girliness and scary mystery. And the last season will be airing soon, so catch up quickly!
The show is centered around five girls, one of whom goes missing one night. This culminates in mystery after mystery as the girls continue to lie, get into trouble, and try to solve who has been tormenting them. The end of every episode This show is incredibly over-the-top, but I can’t help but love it. If only for the killer outfit inspo.
