I can’t believe it’s already 2018! The rumors are true-years go by more and more quickly the older you get. I’m only 22, so I can’t even begin to imagine how quickly things are going to get in the future. That’s why I try to take every opportunity I can to stop and reflect on where I am and how far I’ve come. New Years seems to be the perfect opportunity to do that. I spent a lot of time talking about some of my favorite moments of 2017 on my YouTube channel. So for my blog, I wanted to look into my favorite things of the past year.
It can be difficult to choose just one thing for every category. I mean, a LOT of things change in a year! I can’t even imagine how many hours of videos I’ve watched or the amount of new makeup I bought…and I probably don’t want to know. But I’m sure it was a lot, and to narrow it down to just one was a challenge. Regardless, I managed to do it to the best of my ability. So now it’s time to share it with you!
365 days in a year. Countless moments within each day to choose from. But an obvious stand out to me happened when my parents got a brand new kitten. Her name is Winnie and she is the cutest little Scottish Fold in the entire world. I’m willing to fight you on it. Obviously I love my own cat, but bringing a new furry friend into the family is always an exciting moment. I still remember the excitement of seeing her for the first time and I’ve only grown more and more in love with her since that first day. I’m so happy I filmed a video of the first few days with Winnie so that I’ll always have that to look back on. They grow up so fast *tear*.
There were a lot of exciting tweets this year-from memes to movements-and so many that I couldn’t pick just one. So I went with this and this cat tweet instead. Because through the stress and confusion that is social media, sometimes you just need cute cats to lighten things up.
I have a tie for this category, mainly because I’ve watched and enjoyed a LOT of videos of many different types that it was hard to pick just one. So as far as a funny video, I had to pick this Go-Gurt commercial. No commercial has ever made me laugh as much as this one. And for something more serious, I went with this Vlogbrothers video on productivity. Sometimes you get just the advice you need at exactly the right time, and it sticks with you. This was one of those videos for me.
Without a doubt, the award for the best YouTube creator I discovered this year goes to Allana Davison. I’ve talked about her a few times on my own YouTube channel, but basically I just want to be her best friend. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know I exist and she lives all the way in Canada. Watching her videos will have to be enough for now, but I’m not complaining. I absolutely love her personality and her style of video, not to mention her makeup looks. Which are FIRE. But I digress.
This is another tough one, but ultimately I settled on 80s Films by Jon Bellion. I love Jon Bellion in general, but this song just spoke to me. I’ve listened to it countless times and I’m still nowhere near sick of it. This is the song I turn on when I just want to dance and sing and put myself in a great mood.
I highly doubt this will come as a surprise, but I had to pick Taylor Swift’s Reputation. It was highly anticipated, and it did not disappoint. I know I’m biased, but there is not a song on this album I dislike. It may not necessarily be my favorite album of hers, but it without a doubt wins as my 2017 favorite.
Again, this one isn’t surprising. I’ve been anticipating a new John Green novel for a long time, as have a lot of people, so I was thrilled when Turtles All the Way Down finally released. John Green books have a way of hitting me right where I need to be hit, if that makes sense. They tell me exactly what I need to hear and make me feel exactly how I need to feel. If you want to know more about my thoughts on the book, I made a video about it. And John Green commented on it. NBD.
Beauty and the Beast was my favorite movies of the year, along with everyone else’s, considering it was one of the top grossing films of the year. I just loved seeing one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid come back to life with one of my favorite actresses. It’s such a weird and cool feeling that’s tough to describe. So I’ll just say I loved it and leave it at that.
I watched a lot of great TV shows this year, but none made me feel more warm and cozy than the Great British Bake Off. I realize saying that makes me sound like an old lady. But I just love this show, OK? I binge-watched it like a madwoman, and freaked out again when another season was released on Netflix later last year. It’s totally weird, and I completely understand if you don’t vibe with me on this one, but I just have to be honest. No other show quite lived up to this one for me.
I really increased my podcast game this year, combining old favorites with a lot of new podcasts. But I’d say my favorite of the year would have to go to Meghan Rienks’s Don’t Blame Me podcast. I talked about it a bit here, so I’ll just say that advice podcasts are my jam, especially when they get crazy and weird and brutally honest. Which is exactly what I love about this one.
Without a doubt, my favorite makeup product of the year is the Nars soft matte complete concealer. This concealer is so versatile, covering up exactly what I need it to. Whether it’s a full face of makeup day or a day where I just want to look not-quite-as-scary when I go to the grocery store, I pull out this concealer and it gets the job done for me. It covers things up while still looking undetectable. It’s voodoo magic and worth all the hype.
I grappled with this category for awhile. Do I go with something fashionable? Summery or wintery? Ultimately, I went with the COMFORT and picked the coziest item of clothing I purchased in 2017. Which was obviously this fluffy pullover from Alter’d State. Who needs sweatshirts? Or sweaters? Or coats? This thing is like a massive fuzzy blanket with sleeves. I’m obsessed.
And lastly, my favorite skincare item was a recent splurge, but a totally worthwhile one. I’ve been really into face masks this year, and this Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Mask has easily taken the cake as my favorite one so far. It hydrates, softens, and overall just makes my skin look better when I wake up in the morning. What more can I ask for, really?
That’s all, folks! I hope you enjoyed reading about my favorite things of the year. Let me know in the comments if you love any of the things I mentioned or if I convinced you to try any of them!
