I know what you’re thinking.
“Bryn, didn’t you just say in your recent video that you didn’t want to do beauty stuff anymore?”
Why, yes. Yes I did. But still, I am a girl who loves makeup (even if she doesn’t want to talk about it all the time). So today I woke up and felt the desire to tell you all about my favorite makeup / beauty things of the year. I know! I’m such a contradiction. It may annoy you, but Whitman would be proud.
So without further ado, here are some of my favorite makeup and beauty products of the entire year. Try not to be too overwhelmed by all my beauty guru-ing!! (Also, don’t mind the cat hair that inevitably ended up in every picture – I swear, I can’t help it).
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water, NYX Angel Veil Skin Perfecting Primer, Maybelline Super Stay Better Skin Foundation, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, Too Faced Born This Way Foundation, Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, Too Faced Born This Way Concealer
I’m sure none of these products really come as a surprise. These three foundations have been in a constant rotation throughout the year. They’re all pretty similar to be honest, but just different enough to make having all three worthwhile for me. I know, I’m crazy. On the other hand, these two concealers couldn’t be more different. The Shape Tape will cover anything, while the Born This Way concealer gives a pretty, natural glow. For the primers, the NYX primer is a great dupe for the amazing yet insanely too expensive Hourglass Mineral Veil that I adore but cannot afford. And the Primer Water may seem like a gimmick, but it’s perfect for sinking other primers into the skin and making foundations look great.
Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Palette, Urban Decay “Naked” Eyeshadow, Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette, NYX Tres Jolie Gel Pencil Eyeliners, Benefit Roller Lash Mascara, L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel
Onto the eyes! I’ve been keeping it fairly natural and neutral this year, so no smoky eyes and winged eyeliner for this girl. My favorite products for the eyes have been the things that can achieve a natural look and still pack a punch. The UD Naked eyeshadow has been a go-to to just add a little dimension when I’m going for something simple and easy. When I’m feeling a little more adventurous, I’ll reach for one of these palettes. The Tartelette In Bloom palette offers amazing pinks and browns for something soft and girly, and the ABH Modern Renaissance is my version of “dramatic,” offering browns, golds, and bright pinks, oranges, and reds. The NYX eyeliners have been great for adding a bit of brown or black to the upper waterline, and then I finish off the look with one of these two mascaras – both of which are voluminous and lengthening, but still natural and not too clumpy. And finally, what are eyes without eyebrows? Nothing. So I would be nowhere without my two ABH brow queens: the Brow Wiz and the Clear Brow Gel.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit in Light to Medium, Anastasia Beverly Hills Stick Foundation Contour in “Fawn”, Urban Decay Beached Bronzer in “Bronzed”, Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops in “Sunkissed”, Benefit Hoola Bronzer, Wet N Wild Color Icon Blush in “Rose Champagne”, Tarte Amazonian Clay 24-Hour Blush in “Exposed”, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter Poured in “Moonstone”, Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in “Gleam”
Oh, this picture makes me so happy. Face products are arguably my favorites, as my face feels naked without them. This category had some tough competition, so you know these ones are the best of the best of the best. Of the best. As far as bronzing and contouring go, I love matte bronzers that give warmth to the face without being too orange or brown, or too anything really. Benefit’s Hoola is my go-to for a more natural bronze, and UD Beached bronzer is for days when I want to be bronzed. The Cover FX drops are a great liquid option during the summer, when I want the perfect combination of both natural and bronze. For contour, I’m (obviously) a firm believer that ABH is the way to go. The “Fawn” color is good enough to have it in both powder and stick formulas. What I really love about the Contour Kit is that I am able to use every single color – both highlight and contour shades. Sure, you have to be a little creative, but there are no obvious shades that are terrible or obviously unusable. I’m not big on blushes, so these two are go-tos simply because they are easy and look good no matter what. The Wet N Wild blush has a warmer tone and a bit of a shimmer, which makes it great for summer, and the more natural Tarte blush is great for everything else. Finally, for highlight, I’m a big fan of a natural glow. Becca’s Moonstone in the poured version is great for that. And when I’m looking for something a little more intense, the ABH Glow Kit is my perfect solution. Mixing “Crushed Pearl” and “Starburst” is my favorite.
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in “Honeycomb”, “Zin”, and “Pepper” (not pictured), BareMinerals GenNude Matte Liquid Lipcolor in “XYZ”, BareMinerals GenNude Buttercream Lipgloss in “Totally”, Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm
Now for lip colors, I tend to stick to what I know and love. I have probably talked about all of these a million times before, and I will probably continue to talk about them. Why? BECAUSE THEY’RE GREAT. And when I find a great lip color, I don’t need to keep looking. The Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche formula is an immediate go-to for me, as it’s all natural and comfortable to wear. Since I’m a fan of a natural lip look, my favorite thing to do is just dab a bit of any of these lip colors on to give just a stain of color. Newer favorites are the BareMinerals liquid lipstick and lipgloss, which are extremely comfortable and more affordable than other high-end lip products. “XYZ” is one of those “your lip color, but better” products for me. And the lip gloss adds a great shine to any neutral lip shade. And finally, the Sun Bum chapstick has been a favorite this year for many reasons, including but not limited to the coconut scent, the incredible shine, and the SPF30.
Davines Oi All In One Milk, St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub, Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, Bio Oil, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, Drybar Triple Sec, Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins, Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm, T3 SinglePass 1
And last, but certainly not least (as all the previous products might be worthless without these), is skin and hair care. My skincare routine starts in the shower, by exfoliating my skin with the St. Ives scrub about every other day to take off any dead skin and leave it smooth and glowing. In terms of cleansing, I use the Garnier Micellar Water in the morning to take off any dirt and oil that has shown up on my skin throughout the night, and the Clinique Cleansing Balm to take off any trace of makeup at night. To moisturize, I love the Origins Night-A-Mins in the evening for intense hydration mixed with Bio Oil to help get rid of acne scars that have developed over the years. And finally, the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is an immediate go-to for any breakout situations. As for hair, I use the Davines spray after a shower to detangle my hair and give it a nice shine. Dry shampoo is a hair necessity, and the Living Proof one has become one of my favorites, as it keeps the oil at bay longer than any other dry shampoo I’ve tried. The Drybar Triple Sec spray is amazing for giving volume and texture to my otherwise straight and lackluster hair – which is also where the T3 straightener comes in. Not only does it straighten my hair, but I use it most days for some natural wavy curls that are extremely quick and easy.
And that’s all, folks! I hope you enjoyed this round up of my favorite beauty products of 2016. I know this isn’t normal content for my blog, but it just felt like a nice send-off to 2016, as 2017 is likely to be quite a bit different in terms of content from me. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed reading and I can’t wait to come back in 2017 with brand new stuff that you (hopefully) love! x
