I really love ants.
When I first moved into my apartment back in May, I was feeling pretty lonely. It was my first time truly living alone, and I was having a difficult time adjusting. I didn’t know anyone who lived close to me and I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it through the summer and fall without any friends or family around to keep me company. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty low and I wasn’t sure how I was going to turn it around.
But then the ants moved in.
Suddenly, it was like Christmas had come early. My life had become a Disney movie and I was the Snow White of little black insects. They flocked to my apartment, coming in through the doors, the walls, and the cracks in the floorboards. They absolutely loved me, so much so that they never wanted to leave. They were always around, and if anything ever happened to some of them, they would quickly be replaced by even more. That one wish I made late one night for friends had finally come true, and now I had hundreds. More than I ever thought I deserved. So I feel like it’s only appropriate to return the favor and tell everyone I know about my awesome new pals.
Here are some reasons why I love them:
They eat all my food, which is great because then I don’t have to eat that box of Lucky Charms for breakfast. I’m sure ten years from now I will be really thankful I didn’t eat those delicious marshmallows.
When I’m gone at work during the day, they keep my cat company. She really enjoys spotting them on the wall or the floor and just staring at them. They’re like the best babysitters EVER.
My apartment is now much cleaner, because I feel the need to vacuum and mop the floor so they can really enjoy a nice, pristine living condition. Sometimes I worry that all this cleaning will make them leave, but thankfully that hasn’t happened yet!
They like to surprise me by hiding in my bag so I can have them around when I’m in my car or at work. Typically I hate surprises, but this is just endearing.
I get to have 24/7 entertainment without ever turning on the TV. I’m not even sure why I still pay for cable at this point. There’s nothing like watching the ants run around my coffee table trying to find food. Will they find a crumb?! Who will find it first?! Riveting.
To be honest, I’m really bummed that I’ll be moving out soon. I’m not sure what I’ll do without all my little ant friends.
